P5 have been very busy creating short, animated films inspired by their Victorians Project. This was the first time we ever got the chroma screen to work (a bit like the blue screen technique used in Star Wars etc).

P5's new animation is now available to view! The class have worked really hard designing their sets, planning their action and recording the soundtrack.
To create this work the class, in groups, filmed the whole animation from beginning to end and then filmed shots from different angles and close ups.
Next, they spliced these into the main film using iMovie. We recorded the spoken parts as a whole class. A small group worked on the soundtrack and managed to show different emotions - especially when Buddha encounters the dead man.
I am really pleased with their work and can't wait to see what they produce next!
We really hope you enjoy it!

Our Week Without Waste is well underway and going extremely well. As this lunchbox shows, parents and children are making a huge effort to make sure that we cut down on packaging waste. This is important as it is almost impossible for us to recycle.
Miss Malcolm and half of the class had a great visit to the Waste Aware Cabin at Seafield today whilst the other half made their own paper with me. I can't wait to visit the cabin on Friday with the other half of the class as everyone thought it was a really exciting and interesting trip!

We had a visit from an Eco Schools Inspector on Thursday 29th May and have been given the Eco Schools Green Flag Award - the highest award available. This is a great achievement for the school and reflects the hard work of both our Eco Committee and the whole school. The flag should arrive sometime next week!
Roza, our parent representative did an amazing job pulling together all of our work into a folder and really enabled the children to take ownership of this. The folder is available to look at in our reception area.
Our next steps are to keep up the good work in the areas we have been working on and select three more areas to look at over the next two years. Anyone who would like to get involved in our Eco Schools Activities should get in touch with me via the school.

P4 had a visit from Kathleen Kirkness (Changeworks) to find out more about recycling. They created their own mini composters using some (quite smelly) garden, fruit and vegetable waste. Changeworks also donated some composter caddies so that other classes can get involved too. We then went out to have a look at our school compost bin. Kathleen thought that we needed to have more dry materials, such as paper shreddings. She also had some great ideas to help us with our 'Week Without Waste' project, such as bringing in fabric hankerchiefs rather than using unrecyclable tissues.
Our composters can be seen below - keep checking the blog to see how our composters look in a few weeks.

Another busy day in the garden! The weather was great today and a lot of work was done. The edgings were put in, slabs laid and the staging area has been built. P5 and I hope to put up their pictures tomorrow so you can see the transformation.
P4 were busy filming the process this afternoon and also have an exclusive video interview with Gus who had been supervising the work (and doing a lot of it!).

Gus and the RBS team were off to a busy start moving tonnes of bark chippings and preparing the ground for log seating. The weather was mostly dry and the Chill-Out Zone turned into a staffroom for the day.
Primary 6 did a fantastic job filming the workers this afternoon - we hope to have their video online soon. Primary 5 were Blackhall's official photographers.
